The Syira aka Chevron Mermaid Tail Blanket (Adult): Free Crochet Pattern

I used Four Seasons’ Marvel 8 ply yarn and K hook; but this is a pretty flexible pattern so gauge is not important; the 140 stitches came about because that was the number needed for the size of the intended receiver. You can  adjust the width by adding or deleting the starting chain in multiples of 14s.

You can also adjust the final length of the body by simply adding or deleting the rows.

Stitches (st) (US term):
Ch: chain
Sc: single chain
Dc: double crochet
Fpdc: front-post double crochet
Bpdc: back-post double crochet
Blhdc: back-loop half-double crochet
3dc-tog: 3 double crochet together
2blhdc-tog: 2 back loop half-double crochet together

BODY
Ch2 in the beginning of rows or rounds doesn’t count as a stitch
Foundation: chain 140+1
Row 1: sc 3rd chain from hook; sc all the stitches (140 st); turn
Row 2: ch 2; (doesn’t count as stitch);*3 dc in next st; dc in each of next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches; dc in each of next 3 st; 3 dc in next st;* repeat from * to * 9 times (140 st); turn
Row 3-5: repeat row 2
Row 6: ch 2; *3 fpdc in next st; fpdc in each of next 3 st; 3fpdc-tog in next 3 st; 3fpdc-tog in next 3 stitches; fpdc in each of next 3 st; 3 fpdc in next st;* repeat from * to * 9 times (140 st); turn
Row 7-9: repeat row 2
Row 10: Repeat row 6
Row 11-13: repeat row 2
Row 14: Repeat row 6
Row 15: Repeat Row 2; DO NOT TURN; slip stitch to first dc

Now work in Rounds

Round 1: ch 2; (doesn’t count as stitch);*3 dc in next st; dc in each of next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches; dc in each of next 3 st; 3 dc in next st;* repeat from * to * another 9 times (140 st); slip stitch to first stitch
Round 2: Repeat Round 1
Round 3: ch 2; *3 bpdc in next st; bpdc in each of next 3 st; 3bpdc-tog in next 3 st; 3bpdc-tog in next 3 stitches; bpdc in each of next 3 st; 3 bpdc in next st;* repeat from * to * another 9 times (140 st); turn
*Round 4-6: Repeat Round 1
Round 7: Repeat 3*
Repeat from * to * until desired length
Last Round: ch 2; *dc in next 4 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches; 4 dc in next st;* repeat from * to * another 9 times (100 st); slip stitch to first stitch; fasten off

TAIL: all stitches are done in BACK LOOP only
For Row 1 to 30; it’s a decrease at one end only; then Row 31, it’s increase at that same end to get the tail look. The beginning number of chains and the number of rows actually depend on how large you want the tail to be; 65-75 beginning chain is a good range for adult-sized blanket.
Row 1: Ch 65; blhdc 2nd chain from hook and in each of the next stitches across
Row 2: Ch 2; blhdc in each of the next ch across until the second last stitch st; there are now 2 stitches left; 2blhdc-tog in those 2 st
Row 3: Ch 2; 2blhdc-tog in next 2 st; blhdc in each of next st across
Repeat Row 2-3 until Row 29
Row 30: ch 2; 2 blhdc in next stitch; blhdc in each of the next st across
Row 31: ch 2; blhdc in next stitch across until the second last stitch; there is now one more stitch left; 2 blhdc in the last stitch
Repeat Row 30-31 until Row 59; fasten off

Attach the tail to the body (sew or crochet them together — your call), making sure that the middle of the tail falls in the middle of the body; and then run the thread across the last round of the body and pull it slightly to scrunch the body and get that tapered look.

(My least favourite part but there is just such joy when the body and tail are attached :))

This one is easy, just a straight seam running along the end of the body.

Pull the thread and scrunch up this part, secure the ends and voila!
