The Syira aka Chevron Mermaid Tail Blanket (Adult): Free Crochet Pattern

Pattern by: LIHANNA BORHAN

I used Four Seasons’ Marvel 8 ply yarn and K hook; but this is a pretty flexible pattern so gauge is not important; the 140 stitches came about because that was the number needed for the size of the intended receiver. You can  adjust the width by adding or deleting the starting chain in multiples of 14s.

You can also adjust the final length of the body by simply adding or deleting the rows.

Stitches (st) (US term):
Ch: chain
Sc: single chain
Dc: double crochet
Fpdc: front-post double crochet
Bpdc: back-post double crochet
Blhdc: back-loop half-double crochet
3dc-tog: 3 double crochet together
2blhdc-tog: 2 back loop half-double crochet together

BODY
Ch2 in the beginning of rows or rounds doesn’t count as a stitch
Foundation: chain 140+1
Row 1: sc 3rd chain from hook; sc all the stitches (140 st); turn
Row 2: ch 2; (doesn’t count as stitch);*3 dc in next st; dc in each of next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches; dc in each of next 3 st; 3 dc in next st;* repeat from * to * 9 times (140 st); turn
Row 3-5: repeat row 2
Row 6: ch 2; *3 fpdc in next st; fpdc in each of next 3 st; 3fpdc-tog in next 3 st; 3fpdc-tog in next 3 stitches; fpdc in each of next 3 st; 3 fpdc in next st;* repeat from * to * 9 times (140 st); turn
Row 7-9: repeat row 2
Row 10: Repeat row 6
Row 11-13: repeat row 2
Row 14: Repeat row 6
Row 15: Repeat Row 2; DO NOT TURN; slip stitch to first dc

Now work in Rounds

Round 1: ch 2; (doesn’t count as stitch);*3 dc in next st; dc in each of next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches; dc in each of next 3 st; 3 dc in next st;* repeat from * to * another 9 times (140 st); slip stitch to first stitch
Round 2: Repeat Round 1
Round 3: ch 2; *3 bpdc in next st; bpdc in each of next 3 st; 3bpdc-tog in next 3 st; 3bpdc-tog in next 3 stitches; bpdc in each of next 3 st; 3 bpdc in next st;* repeat from * to * another 9 times (140 st); turn
*Round 4-6: Repeat Round 1
Round 7: Repeat 3*
Repeat from * to * until desired length
Last Round: ch 2; *dc in next 4 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches; 4 dc in next st;* repeat from * to * another 9 times (100 st); slip stitch to first stitch; fasten off

TAIL: all stitches are done in BACK LOOP only
For Row 1 to 30; it’s a decrease at one end only; then Row 31, it’s increase at that same end to get the tail look. The beginning number of chains and the number of rows actually depend on how large you want the tail to be; 65-75 beginning chain is a good range for adult-sized blanket.
Row 1: Ch 65; blhdc 2nd chain from hook and in each of the next stitches across
Row 2: Ch 2; blhdc in each of the next ch across until the second last stitch st; there are now 2 stitches left; 2blhdc-tog in those 2 st
Row 3: Ch 2; 2blhdc-tog in next 2 st; blhdc in each of next st across
Repeat Row 2-3 until Row 29
Row 30: ch 2; 2 blhdc in next stitch; blhdc in each of the next st across
Row 31: ch 2; blhdc in next stitch across until the second last stitch; there is now one more stitch left; 2 blhdc in the last stitch
Repeat Row 30-31 until Row 59; fasten off

Attach the tail to the body (sew or crochet them together — your call), making sure that the middle of the tail falls in the middle of the body; and then run the thread across the last round of the body and pull it slightly to scrunch the body and get that tapered look.

(My least favourite part but there is just such joy when the body and tail are attached :))

This one is easy, just a straight seam running along the end of the body.

Pull the thread and scrunch up this part, secure the ends and voila!

Enjoy!

    1. Hi Tiffany, row 6 is basically the same as the other rows, except that instead of simple double crochet, you do front-post double crochet. This will give the textured look, row 6 is the wrong side so that’s why the fpdc is used.

  1. Hit there! I love your pattern! You mention adjusting the pattern but you don’t say what size you did make. I’m looking to make this for a young child and was wondering what your finished measurements were.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi there! Mine came to 48 inches from top to end of the body, for adults. But the 140 st count was to fit a 39″ body circumference.
For a young child, just measure the body circumference and do multiples of 14s until you get to the desired circumference.

  2. In row 6, does the original *3 fpdc in one dc* go in the first stitch, or do you chain 2 and then go on to the second stitch? I tried the row twice and have an extra stitch at the end of the row.

Thanks for your helo. Beautiful pattern!

    1. Hi Andrea, I chain 2 and then do the 3 fpdc in the first stitch. Yes, there is that extra stitch at the end, but the side will still look straight.

  3. I love this! My niece want me to make one for my 4-yr.-old great-niece, and I think I can adjust this with no problem. I want to make sure, though, that I’m understand something from just reading through the pattern…..this is open in the back at the top, right? Not closed up all the way like a snuggy? Thanks so much!

  4. I am so excited for this pattern! I’ve been looking for weeks to find something with a design somewhere between a plain double crochet (too plain) and the crocodile stitch (too pointy and stiff looking) and I think this is just perfect! I do have a question about the length. About how high up would you say this comes to on an adult? I’d like it to come up to the chest rather than the belly so I’m just wondering if I need to add rows. Thank you so much!

    1. I made mine for adults, I just get their measurements and just repeat the rounds until I get the desired length.
      And thank you 🙂

  5. I usually don’t have any problems with patterns but I must say I am stumped with how you do 3 fpdc in one stitch??? I love this pattern and I am trying to get two made before Christmas. Please help

  6. Is there another yarn you would suggest using and how many skeins? My daughter is wanting to purchase the yarn and this yarn is not available where she can get yarn.

    1. Just use any yarn that’s comfortable for her. She just needs to check if the size will come out as she’d like it to be, and adjust the number of stitches accordingly.

  7. Hi, thanks for posting free pattern! Starting with this today. If I use a 4 yarn and 5.25 hook, do i still chain 140+1? It’s for the same size as you made.

    1. I am struggling with this too!! I am way off! Can someone post a video of the *3 fpdc in next st; fpdc in each of next 3 st; 3fpdc-tog in next 3 st; 3fpdc-tog in next 3 stitches; fpdc in each of next 3 st; 3 fpdc in next st;* ??

      Thanks!

      1. Felicia I just did a fpdc or bpdc for each stitch, and decreased the fpdc or bpdc over the regular decrease and it worked out.

  8. Thanks…not sure I understand what you mean by over the regular decrease? When I did it, I did 12 repeats and still had room and my stitches are only 140 like they are supposed to be. I think I am doing the fpdc wrong, but not sure what I have messed up?

  9. Ok lets see,I did a single stitch over the increase instead of putting 3 on one stitch. For the decrease I decreased the same as the regular crochet, only on the back or front posts, does that make more sense?

  10. Hello!! I have finished the main body, I just have a question about the very last row. Is it supposed to give a straight edge or is it scalloped like the other rows? I can’t tell from the picture, I’m afraid.
Many thanks, I loved making it and I can’t wait to send it to my friend!! 🙂

  11. I am really struggling to understand row 2 It says:

‘3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches’

First I read it as 3dc-tog x 3 and all those together in one stitch and then 3dc-tog as 3 separate stitches but doing it like that combined with the other stitches in the row don’t add up. What is the difference in ‘st’ to ‘stitches’. I’m quite confused with this.

    1. I too had trouble deciphering “st” and “stitches”. They’re actually the same thing, but worded in such a way as to not have the reader think it’s a typo in directions.

  14. 3dc-tog in next 3 st; 3dc-tog in next 3 stitches; (Row 2)

So does this mean 3 dc together in 1 stitch then the next 3 dc together in the next 3 stitches….so it’s basically making 4 stitches into 2?

It seems like it just wouldn’t look even

  15. is there a video of this anywhere I am a beginner with very basic knowledge of crochet but want to do this for my granddaughter who loves mermaids I don’t understand what the beginning 2dc in the beginning of the rows that are not counted as a stitch means I have too many stitches every row and when the row 6 is done are the triple dc together and the 3fdc suppose to line up when you are done on the previous row

  16. My first problem with this pattern is if you chain 140 +1 and you then sc in the 3rd ch from hook. How can you come up with 140 sc?

    Like

    1. I had the same issue. I just did a SC in the chain next to the book and ended up with 140. After doing that I have had no issues with the pattern as written. I’m using an ombré yarn and the colors are changing every two rows. It’s so pretty!
